FTC Team 6996 Oncoming Storm is a group of passionate students from Penfield, NY, dedicated to designing, building, and programming robots to compete in the annual FIRST Tech Challenge. Established in 2013, the team was created to bridge the gap between FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams and FRC Team 1511 Rolling Thunder, providing a pathway for students to grow their STEM skills and continue their robotics journey.
Our mission goes beyond building a first-rate robot—we focus on learning the engineering process, overcoming challenges, and embracing the core values of FIRST and STEM education. Through team collaboration, community outreach, and public service, we strive to inspire and serve as role models for the next generation of innovators.
Most importantly, Oncoming Storm fosters a culture of teamwork, creativity, and hands-on learning. Members are encouraged to share ideas, develop new skills, and, above all, have fun!
The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is an engaging robotics competition in which teams collaborate in an alliance format, similar to traditional sports. Students design, build, and program their robots to conquer diverse challenges. They gain hands-on experience in computer-aided design, mechanical and electrical engineering, programming, and more.
While coaches and mentors provide guidance, students are primarily responsible for the robot's design and construction, fostering independence and problem-solving skills. Winning in FTC goes beyond mere points; it's about demonstrating excellence in design, team spirit, and Gracious Professionalism (GP).
Behind the scenes, adult volunteers, including engineers, educators, machinists, and supportive parents, are essential for the program's success. Active parent involvement is particularly crucial for ensuring the team's success and fostering a positive learning environment.
We aim to raise $10,000 yearly to cover necessary materials costs and increase travel expenses. With this funding, we can sustain our current team, launch a second team, and establish a grant program. This grant program ensures that all students can participate and benefit from our program, regardless of their financial situation.
It's important to note that our program doesn't receive funding from the school district. Instead, we rely on donations from generous individuals like you and the support of parents.
Your contribution makes a significant impact by providing students with valuable learning opportunities in STEM fields. Together, let's continue to inspire and empower the next generation of innovators through Penfield Robotics FTC 6996!
