March 7 & 8, 2025, Regionally, the team showcased their dedication and growth by ranking 16th out of 92 teams in the FIRST New York Excelsior region and placing 28th out of 245 teams statewide. These accomplishments highlight the team's competitive spirit and ongoing commitment to excellence.
On February 9, 2025, FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 6996, known as "Oncoming Storm," showcased exceptional skill and teamwork at the Corning Qualifier in Corning, NY. The team, hailing from Penfield, NY, entered the competition with determination and a well-engineered robot.
Throughout the qualification matches, Oncoming Storm demonstrated consistent performance, achieving a notable 4-1-0 record. This impressive showing earned them the 2nd rank among 17 competing teams. Their strategic prowess and robot efficiency were evident in their match outcomes, including a high-scoring victory in Qualification Match 19 with a score of 222-165.
Advancing into the playoff rounds as the captain of the 2nd alliance, Oncoming Storm continued to excel. Despite a challenging start in the upper bracket, they rallied in the lower bracket, securing consecutive wins. Their resilience culminated in a thrilling final match, where they emerged victorious with a score of 131-122, clinching the title of Winning Alliance Captain.
This achievement at the Corning Qualifier not only highlights Oncoming Storm's technical expertise and collaborative spirit but also secures their advancement to the New York Excelsior Regional Championship. On January 19, 2025, Team 6996, known as "Oncoming Storm," participated in the Buffalo Qualifier held at the Buffalo Academy of Science in Buffalo, NY. This event marked the second of three qualifier tournaments in which the team will compete this season. Demonstrating exceptional performance, they secured the prestigious Inspire Award, which is presented to teams that best embody the mission of the FIRST Tech Challenge program. This accolade highlights their role as ambassadors and leaders within the FIRST community.
Team 6996 achieved a 3-2-0 record in the qualification matches, earning them the 3rd rank with an Offensive Power Rating (OPR) of 34.00. Their strategic excellence propelled them to become the Finalist Alliance Captain during the elimination rounds.
Securing the Inspire Award at a qualifier is particularly significant, as it guarantees advancement to the New York Excelsior Regional Championship. This opportunity allows the team to compete at a higher level while showcasing their innovation, teamwork, and community outreach efforts. Advancing to the regional competition also paves the way for potential qualification for the World Championships, a pinnacle of achievement in the FIRST Tech Challenge program.
